Bath · The original

Founded in Bath, 1894.

The same building. The same approach. Six generations of clients have walked under the same brass nameplate.

London · The City office

Expanded to London, 2008.

The City reach. The same standards. Corporate work runs through London; the disposition runs through Bath.

The Senior Partner

A practice held in two hands.

Clients come to us when the matter is consequential. Our work, in the simplest terms, is to make sure the consequences are the ones they intended.

Margaret Pellican is the firm’s senior managing partner and the fourth Pellican to lead the Bath chambers. She qualified in 1991, made partner in 2002, and assumed senior partnership in 2018. She sits on the firm’s three principal committees and chairs the practice review.

She splits the working week between the Bath chambers and the London office. Most clients meet her in Bath.

How we work

What considered counsel looks like.

A long meeting before the work begins. A small team that does not change. Plain advice in writing. We do not chase volume, and we do not pitch to win mandates we cannot do well.

Most new clients arrive on referral. We accept work in three of every four enquiries. The reason for declining is always given in writing.

From the Insights

Recent commentary.

  1. 14 April 2026 · Real Estate

The Building Safety Act and the Bath leasehold portfolio.

The 2022 Act has reset the question of who pays for what when a building no longer meets its specification. The settlement is more nuanced for Bath than the headlines suggest.

  2. 28 February 2026 · Private Client

A note on family investment companies, six years on.

The structure has matured. The questions clients ask in 2026 are different from the ones we answered in 2020. Worth restating the principles.

  3. 11 January 2026 · Dispute Resolution

When to litigate, and when to walk to the lift.

A short piece on the calculus we apply when a client arrives believing the matter must be fought. Often it must not.
