Practice

Six areas of practice. One disposition.

We do a small number of things, and we do them carefully. Each area is led from one of the two offices and supported by partners across the firm.

  1. Corporate

Acquisitions, disposals, joint ventures, shareholder agreements, and the boring but consequential paperwork in between. We act for owner-managed businesses on the sell side and on the buy side, and for established families managing family-investment companies. Led from London. Henry Whitford, partner.

  2. Private Client

Wealth structuring, wills, trusts, and the inter-generational planning that sits behind them. We work with established families, owner-managers preparing for sale, and clients with cross-border affairs. Discretion as a working principle. Led from Bath. Margaret Pellican, senior partner.

  3. Real Estate

Commercial and residential transactions across the South West and Greater London. Listed buildings a speciality, drawing on a 130-year working knowledge of Bath’s Georgian portfolio. Title indemnities, leasehold reform, and the long tail of the Building Safety Act. Led from Bath. David Soames, partner.

  4. Dispute Resolution

Commercial disputes, contentious probate, partnership disputes, and the increasingly common matters that sit in the space between commercial and private. We litigate when we must and settle when we should. Led from London. Joanna Reeve, partner.

  5. Trusts and Probate

Estate administration, trust drafting, and the inter-generational planning that keeps the rest of a family’s affairs simple. Many of our clients on this side of the practice are in the third or fourth generation of the firm’s representation. Led from Bath.

  6. Tax

Tax counsel for transactions, estates, and trusts. Calm, conservative, and well-evidenced. We do not market schemes. The work supports the corporate and private-client sides of the firm and acts on referral for a small number of external clients. Led from London.

How we work

A small team that does not change.

Each matter has a partner who owns it from the first call to the closing letter. Associates are part of the team, but the partner does the work. The phone we give the client at the start is the phone the client uses at the end.

Tell us about the matter.

A short note is enough. We will reply within two working days with a plain assessment of fit.
